The Rafeiro do Alentejo is one of the FCI (No. 96, Gr. 2, sec 2.2) recognized Portuguese breed.

Origin and History

There is some evidence that the Rafeiro do Alentejo is a well-established breed. The shepherds valued him for his qualities as a herding dog very, where he not only guards good, but also protects the herd from predators and rustlers.

Beginning of the 20th century, there were hardly any dogs of this type. Nevertheless, 1940 was the first definition of a standard. Even today he stands not good; after all, but some friends of this breed have found that the worst so far have been able to prevent.

Description

The dog is up to 76 cm tall and weighs 50 kg, a quite eye-catching appearance. The coat is short or preferably medium; thick, smooth in the colors black, wolf gray, fawn or yellow with white spots or the base color is white with patches of these colors, as well as others are spotted or blotched. His ears are medium high, folded, falling to the side and not very mobile

Nature

The Rafeiro do Alentejo is far from unproblematic. The inherent high sharpness makes him a pure entertainment lovers as good as useless. On its territory, guarding flocks, it is excellent. He is by his power and size of a mighty defender of his herds, specially at night every alien being, whether human or animal, is without warning.
