Raffaele Farina

Cardinal Raffaele Farina SDB ( * September 24 1933 in Buonalbergo, Province of Benevento, Italy) is a retired cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Farina resigned after his school days on 25 September 1954 in the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco. He received the sacrament of Holy Orders in 1958 and in 1981 became secretary of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences in 1986 and undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture.

1991 he was appointed rector of the Pontifical Salesian University. Pope John Paul II appointed him on 25 May 1997 as prefect of the Vatican Library.

On 15 November 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. Farina titular bishop of Opitergium. He received his episcopal consecration Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone SDB on 16 December of the same year; Co-consecrators were the Kardinalgroßpönitentiar, James Francis Cardinal Stafford, and the former archivist and librarian of Holy Roman Church, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran.

On 25 June 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. archivist and librarian of the Holy Roman Church. At the same Farina was elevated to titular per hac vice. Farina has taken up the post of archivist and librarian of Holy Roman Church on September 1, 2007.

Raffaele Farina is a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Since 2000 he is a member, as a corresponding member of the Central Directorate of the Monumenta Historica Germaniae.

24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title of San Giovanni della Pigna diakonia in the College of Cardinals. On June 9, 2012 Benedict XVI accepted. Farinas reasons of age pre- mounted resignation from the office of the archivist and librarian of Holy Roman Church.

Following the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Farina took part in the conclave of 2013. On June 24, 2013 Pope Francis has appointed him president of the Commission for the control of the IOR ( Vatican Bank).
