Ragalna

Ragalna is a city in the Province of Catania in the Italian region Sicily, with 3682 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Ragalna is located 30 km northwest of Catania on the southern slopes of Mount Etna. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and summer tourism.

The neighboring municipalities are Belper, Bianca Villa, Paternò and Santa Maria di Licodia.

History

The community is of Islamic origin. The name comes from the Arabic, about the village of Anna. Was developed by the community as a long row of houses. A center formed until 1868, when the parish church was built. Since 1985 Ragalna is an independent municipality. In summer, the church is growing strongly, because it is used as a holiday resort.
