Rahnfels

The Rahnfels is a mountain located in the Palatinate Forest, about 2 km north-west of the castle ruins Hard castle. With a peak altitude of 517 m above sea level. NN is the Rahnfels the highest elevation of the Palatinate Forest north of Isenach.

Summit plateau

On the summit plateau of Rahn Felses is located at a vantage point, the Frankenthaler Cottage. The simple wooden hut was built in 1906 by the local chapter of Frankenthal the Palatinate Forest Association and since then offers hikers shelter from bad weather.

During the Cold War was on the south side of the summit, a relay radio station and a telephone forwarding set up the DSN network of the U.S. Armed Forces. The asphalt road to the summit dates from this period and ends today at a fenced and in the meantime located partly privately owned forest glade, are seen on the remains of the military facility.

Traffic

The Rahn rocks can be reached either via a scenic hike on foot ( Signs: red dot) or the L518, which starts at the southern edge of Leistadt at a roundabout. At km 7 branches in a right to left an asphalted streets down, reaching the summit plateau after about 1.5 km.
