Rail transport in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Rail transport in Bosnia and Herzegovina is handled by two railroad companies, which have emerged from the Yugoslav Railways:

  • Željeznice Federacije of Bosnia and Herzegovina ( ŽFBH )
  • Željeznice Republike Srpska ( ŽRS )

This dichotomy stems from the division of Bosnia and Herzegovina into two entities as a result of the Dayton Agreement. The coordination between the two companies is carried out by a holding company, Bosanskohercegovačka željeznička Javna Korporacija ( BHŽJK ).

Route network

The length of the railway network of Bosnia is currently 1031 km. The Bosnian rail network was formerly much more extensive, around 1970, however, several routes were shut down in Bosnian gauge and partially removed entirely. Has been set, for example, the route Sarajevo- Titovo Užice, on the express train Sarajevo- Belgrade wrong.

The two main railway lines of the country are:

  • Railway line Ploce - Vinkovci ( BiH: Čapljina Mostar -Sarajevo - Konjic - Zenica -Doboj - Šamac, in the valley of the rivers Neretva and Bosna, Pan-European Transport Corridor No. Vc)
  • Railway Bihać - Zvornik ( Bihać - Novi Grad - Prijedor - Banja Luka -Doboj - Dubrava Zvornik )

2011 run on the entire route Novi Grad - Prijedor - Banja Luka -Doboj extensive track renewal work.

2011, the route Sarajevo-Mostar-Čapljina/Grenze is extensively renovated with renewal of the track and partly adaptations to the contact line. The subsequent section to Ploce in Croatia has been renewed.

Željeznice Federacije of Bosnia and Herzegovina ( ŽFBH )

The Željeznice Federacije of Bosnia and Herzegovina ( ŽFBH ) (German railway company of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina Federation ) has its seat in Sarajevo and operates the following routes in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The ŽFBH was formed in 2001 from the merger of Bosniak controlled Željeznice of Bosnia and Herzegovina ( ZBH ) and the Croatian control Herceg- Bosne Željeznice ( ZHB ).

Since 1992, the ZBH / ŽFBH member of the UIC and UIC uses the country code 50

Željeznice Republike Srpska ( ŽRS )

The Željeznice Republike Srpska ( ŽRS ) (German railway company of the Republic of Republika Srpska ) is based in Doboj and operates the following routes in the Republika Srpska.

Since 1998, ŽRS member of the UIC and UIC uses the country code 44

Use (as of 2013)

General: The operation processing is difficult due to permanent speed restrictions and personal elaborate security systems. At the boundaries between ZFBH ZSR and the locomotives are changed (although identical locomotives)! The cars of ZFBH and ZSR are, as far as the passenger area, poorly maintained and serviced on regional trains often extremely poor.

Passenger transport: Within Bosnia and Herzegovina, the railway today has little importance for passenger traffic. There is a Fernzugpaar Zagreb - Dobrlijn - Banja Luka - Sarajevo and a Fernzugpaar Ploce - Mostar - Sarajevo. On these two routes there are also local traffic within the country (mostly within the entities ).

Freight transport: For freight transport, however, it plays an important role, especially in the industrial centers of the country. Primary users and major customers in the Bosnian railways are the companies of the chemical industry and coal mining in Tuzla, the ironworks as well as the company, ArcelorMittal Zenica, the erzverarbeitenden farms in Zenica and Tuzla, the iron ore plants in Prijedor and the aluminum factory in Mostar.

Low-floor

2008, a prototype low-floor was appointed by the Croatian industrial companies Končar Group. On 28 October 2009 he was unveiled at the Končar site in Zagreb. In early January 2010, he was shipped to Bosnia. Here are a few test drives and in time for the summer timetable of the train is to be used on the route Sarajevo- Mostar - Ploce. In May 2011, the low-floor was not yet in operation. The trains run on schedule since July 2012 Monday to Friday between Zenica, Sarajevo and Mostar, Sarajevo and Mostar Saturdays between .. A planned extension during the summer half- year of Ploce on the Adriatic coast in 2012 not yet been implemented.

Talgo trains

The Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina ( ŽFBH ) have ordered nine nine-part Talgo sets in July 2005, the technically derived from Talgo 7, a lack of demand but are not spurwechsel capable.

Five units are set up as a day train ( end car, 1st class, 1st class coach with wheelchair area, cafeteria cars, five cars, 2nd class, and end car, 2nd class, a total of 237 seats), four units as the overnight train ( end car with reclining seats, two recliners cars, sleeping cars, Cafeteria cars, three cars, 2nd class, and end car, 2nd class, a total of 186 seats).

The delivery was scheduled for the period from October 2010 to December 2011, the scheduled time of use on the routes from Sarajevo to Ljubljana, Zagreb and Belgrade was originally supposed to begin in 2011. However, the deliveries were made until the spring of 2012 so that the test runs in May and June 2012 were carried out.

The Railways of Republika Srpska ( ŽRS ) have ordered five additional train sets, about their equipment and the immediate schedule, however, is not yet known.
