Raimundo Pereira

Raimundo Pereira ( born 1956 ) is a lawyer and politician from Guinea- Bissau and was President of the National Assembly since 2008.

Political career

Educated at the University of Lisbon lawyer and members of the Partido Africano da Independencia da Guiné e Cabo Verde ( PAIGC ) was one day after the assassination of President João Bernardo Vieira on 2 March 2009 by the army of his country as president of the Assembleia Nacional do Povo because Guiné -Bissau - in this position, he was elected on 22 December 2008 - appointed as interim president and remained in that capacity until December 8 of the same year, over the objection of the opposition party Partido para a Renovação Social. Pereira's task in the interim period was the organization of elections. He applied himself to the PAIGC to run for the presidency, but Malam Bacai Sanhá gave preference, who was elected as President on 26 July 2009. After the death Sanhás 9 January 2012 Pereira took over as acting president again. On 12 April 2012, the government was overthrown by a military coup. Pereira and the former prime minister and winner of the first round of presidential elections, Carlos Gomes Júnior, were arrested
