Rainbow Warrior

Rainbow Warrior ( German: Rainbow Warrior) is or was the name of three ships of the environmental organization Greenpeace:

  • The Rainbow Warrior I in 1985 sunk by bombing of the French secret
  • The Rainbow Warrior II was from 1989 to 2011 held by Greenpeace
  • The Rainbow Warrior III was commissioned in October 2011.

In addition, the activists of the organization call themselves occasionally as Rainbow Warriors.

Name

The name comes from a legend that was first published in 1962 in the book Warriors of the Rainbow by William Willoya and Vinson Brown. There prophesied an Indian woman a little boy, after the Earth has been ravaged and the animals died, a new strain would come into the world, which consists of people of many colors, classes and creeds. These would make by their deeds the earth green again and be called Warriors of the Rainbow ( Warriors of the Rainbow ).
