Raincoat ( Hindi: रेनकोट ) is an Indian film directed by Rituparno Ghosh from the year 2004.

Action

Manoj is no income and comes from Bhagalpur in Bihar to Kolkata. With the help of his friend Alok, a producer of television series, and his wife Shila, in which he comes, he would ask former school friends to provide financial support for his planned independence. After visiting some of his friends with success, he wants to meet his ex- fiancee Niru, who had separated from him for marriage to a wealthier man.

In the pouring rain with a borrowed Shila raincoat he goes to her. Only after prolonged ringing opens it and it unfolds a long conversation, the Niru from her successful business man and her bored housewife told while in luxury. Manoj turns towards her as successful shows, where he makes use of his information in the life of his friend Alok and gives himself as a TV series producer.

As goes with Niru Manojs raincoat out of the house to get something to eat for Manoj, he opens the shutters and lets a man in the apartment which eventually turns out to be the landlord. He told Manoj that Niru and her husband for months now owe the rent and are about to be thrown out. You are completely depleted and the entire home furnishings belonged to a furniture company, who have sublet the living room for shelter of furniture. Manoj is shocked. He paid with the driven- with his friends money, 12,000 rupees, three months' rent for Niru and asks for clemency for them.

Even after Niru is back, both put their lies continue on their life situation. Manoj leaves her a message that he has paid the rent. The next day Shila Manoj is an envelope, which she found in a raincoat. Niru has left him her golden bangles, as she had found Manojs appeal letter to his friends in the raincoat.

Comments

Raincoat is Rituparno Ghosh's first film in Hindi. It is a free adaptation of the short story The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry.

In flashbacks, the memories Manojs to the common time are shown with Niru. These are shot in bright, vibrant colors and stand in stark contrast to the held in shades of gray scenes in Nirus apartment.

The chamber theater -like movie drama contains no typical for the Bollywood entertainment movies dance scenes.
