Raja Ravi Varma

Raja Ravi Varma ( born April 29, 1848 in Kilimanoor, Travancore, † October 2, 1906 ) was an Indian painter.

Life

Varma was known for his paintings of figures and scenes from the Hindu epics Mahabharata and Ramayana. His works are examples of a painting that crosses Indian traditions with the techniques of European painting. Also for the presentation beautiful, dressed in saris women is known Varma.

In 1873 he won the first prize in the Vienna Art Exhibition. Varma was married to Pururuttathi Nal Amma Thampuran Bhageerathi and had five children.
