Rajzel Żychlińsky

Rajzel Zychlinski ( born July 27, 1910 in Gąbin as Rajzla Żychlińska, † June 13, 2001 in Concord, California, USA) was a Polish- and especially Yiddish poet.

Life

Rajzel Zychlinski, came from a rabbinical family, is considered one of the greatest poets in the Yiddish language. At age 12, she began to write, first in Polish, then in Yiddish. At 17, she wrote her first poem in Yiddish, at age 18, she had a first publication in the Warsaw newspaper folk. She worked in an orphanage in Wloclawek, then until 1939 in a Warsaw bank. When the German Wehrmacht invaded Poland, Rajzel Zychlinski fled to the Soviet-occupied Lvov and on to Kolomyja. There she married the psychiatrist Isaac Kanter († 1990). After the German invasion of the Soviet Union, she fled with her husband in 1941 in the vicinity of Kazan, where in 1943 her son Marek was born. Her mother and her siblings remained in Poland were murdered in Chelmno and Treblinka by the Nazis. This lifelong trauma, and the further shocks her century are - present in her poems - partly silent or symbolic allusion.

In 1946, Rajzel Zychlinski with her family back to Poland; they found, however, no longer had a home. 1948-51 they lived in Paris, then they migrated to the United States. In Brooklyn Rajzel wore as a factory worker in a tie factory to the common livelihood. In parallel, she attended the High School and attended study courses in biology, literature and social science. Her last years she spent from 1997 near her son in California.
