Ralph Doubell

Ralph Doubell ( born February 11, 1945 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian middle-distance runner and Olympic champion.

Doubell actually had a only short international sporting career, but he was the right time in the right place - at the Olympics - well prepared and in top shape. He graduated from the University of Melbourne where he got as manager of the legendary Austrian Franz Stampfl. Doubells first important international success was the victory in the 800 - meter race at the World Student Games in 1967 in Tokyo min with a time of 1:46,7.

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City Doubell won the gold medal in the 800 meters, put the existing world record of 1:44,3 min before which Kenyans Wilson Kiprugut ( silver ) and the Americans Tom Farrell (bronze). Doubell was also qualified for the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, but had to cancel his participation due to various injuries.

After retiring from active competition, he worked as director of the international department of Deutsche Bank in Australia. By the year 2007, he was managing director of Telstra Stadium in Sydney.
