Ralph Nelson

Ralph Nelson ( born August 12, 1916 in New York; † December 21, 1987 in Santa Monica, California ) was an American film and television director, producer, screenwriter and actor.

Nelson turned in the 1960s and 1970s, a series of very successful films that also met with fierce criticism because of its unsparing depiction of American history and the thematization of the prevailing racism.

Among his best known works include the feature film Lilies of the Field in 1962, which was nominated as the best feature film for an Oscar and with whom he was in the 1963 Berlinale competition for the Golden Bear. A second time he took part with his film Charly at the Berlinale 1968. In the movies duel in Diablo and The Soldier Blue, which explores the Sand Creek Massacre, he played small supporting roles.

Nelson is the father of hypertext visionary Theodor Holm Nelson.
