Ralph P. Lowe

Ralph Phillips Lowe ( born November 27, 1805 Warren County, Ohio; † December 22, 1883 in Washington DC ) was an American politician and from 1858 to 1860 the 4th Governor of the State of Iowa.

Early years

Lowe visited to 1829 Miami University and then studied law in Alabama. Then he ran a law firm with his brother in Dayton (Ohio ). In 1840 he moved to Muscatine, Iowa, where he began a career in politics

Rise in Iowa

In 1844 he was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Iowa. Between 1852 and 1857 he was District Judge of the First Judicial District in that State. In 1858, Lowe was chosen as the Republican candidate for the new governor of Iowa. He was the first of a long line of governors of the Republican Party in this state. With a single interruption by Horace Boies in the years 1890-1894 there presented the Republicans until 1933 the governors.

Governor of Iowa

Ralph Lowe took up his new post on 13 January 1858. Due to a constitutional amendment his term was reduced from four to two years. During this time a census was conducted and prepared for the establishment of the Agricultural College. The State Bank of Iowa was founded and started a school for the blind in operation.

After the end of his two-year tenure, he became a judge of the Supreme Court of Iowa. Four of his eight years in this court, he was its chairman. In 1868 he moved to Washington, where he worked for the federal prosecutor's office. Ralph Lowe died in December 1883. Together with his wife Phoebe Carleton he had nine children.
