RAMDAC

A RAMDAC (Random Access Memory Digital / Analog Converter ) is a chip on the graphics card, which is responsible for the conversion of digital ( video memory ) into analog image signals (monitor). It is therefore only required in connection with cathode ray tube screens.

It contains a small static memory are stored in the color table, three D / A converters ( one for each of the primary colors red, green, blue). Each of these D / A converter converts the digital color value for a base color using the color table in an intelligible for the monitor analog voltage value.

The RAMDAC is realized either on the graphics chip or as an external module.

The main feature is the pixel frequency, that is the number of pixels that can convert the RAMDAC per second. The higher the speed, the higher the resolution and / or refresh rate can be selected. Addition, it is also the slope of the output signal of importance, it determines the sharpness.
