Rammu ( Rammo German, Swedish RAMOE ) is an Estonian island in the Baltic Sea, located in the Gulf of Finland.
Description
Rammu belongs administratively to the municipality Jõelähtme in Harju County. The size of the island is 1.0256 km ² with a length of about 3.5 km. Rammu is up to 3.4 m above the sea level. Like most islands the area is Rammu stony places, but are also sandy areas. Rammu is especially known for numerous boulders.
History
About the first colonization of the island are no precise information. 1570, the island was mentioned as holm Ramboe. She was probably inhabited by ethnic Sweden since the beginning of the 18th century. Later, three mills were recorded on Rammu. People lived from fishing, but also from smuggling. Since 1920 a school was operating on Rammu. In 1950, the approximately 100 remaining inhabitants were expelled by the Soviet occupation forces from the island. Of the once 22 villages on the south beach of the island ruins remain today only. On the island are still two lighthouses that are now out of service.
