Ranch

The term refers to a ranching modern form of extensive livestock production, which is widespread in North America, South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Originally such livestock farms emerged only in naturally formed open landscapes. In relation to these natural pastures Ranching is therefore mobile and the pastoral nomadic livestock summarized along with the traditional, the term pastoralism.

On a ranch, the land ownership including eponymous home of the Ranchers ( Rancher ), are mainly kept cattle or sheep, rarely also agricultural. The cattle are marked in many countries by fire sign, to correlate them as ownership of a certain ranch can. Since the cattle can dispel the often hundreds to thousands of square kilometers and not always confined by fences areas, the owners of individual animals can be otherwise impossible to determine. The herds are using specially trained western horses such as Quarter Horses, Paint Horses, Appaloosas or Criollos (South America) rounded up to the branding of pups and later the sale of slaughtering animals.

Ranching is mainly operated in areas that are too dry for farming, such as semi-arid savannas and steppes beyond the agronomic dry borders. Stables are seldom available. Due to the drought, it is bound to very large areas. Risks are the sometimes dangerous alignment on the world market and the high degree of specialization and the slow market adjustment.

To a lesser extent Ranching in semihumidem is common to humidem grassland as the Pampa Humeda in the south and the Llanos in northern South America and in some regions of the Plains states of the U.S..
