Randall Thompson

Randall Thompson (* April 21, 1899 in New York City; † July 9, 1984 in Boston ) was an American composer and music educator who was primarily known for his choral works.

Thompson graduated in 1916 at Harvard University, among others with Ernest Bloch and Archibald Thompson Davison. A Damrosch Scholarship allowed him in 1922 to study at the American Conservatory in Rome. After his return to the U.S., he settled first in Greenwich Village down and composed songs and music revues as The Straw Hat and Grand Street Follies.

In 1927 he became professor of music, organist and choir director at Wellesley College. Later he taught at Harvard University, led several madrigal choirs and the Juilliard Choir and became a professor at Berkeley University, the University of Virginia and Princeton University. For two years he headed the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where Samuel Barber and Leonard Bernstein were among his pupils. His study Music College (1935 ) resulted in a fundamental reform of the university music education in the USA.

Thompson composed three symphonies, two operas, more symphonic works and chamber music. Popular but were especially his choral works.
