The Rangitikei River is one of the longest rivers of New Zealand. It rises on the North Island of New Zealand to the south of Lake Taupo in the Kaimanawa Ranges and flows about 40 kilometers south of the city of Wanganui in the Tasman Sea.

The river flows on its way over 185 miles from the Central Plateau of the North Island past the towns of Taihape, Managweka, Huntersville, Marton and Bull The river gives the Rangitikei district name.

History

The Rangitikei River has an important significance for the Maori. Many settlements are still along its course. In 1897, the Rangitikei experienced its largest flood disaster, six bridges were washed away along its course and the harbor at its mouth was completely destroyed and never rebuilt.

Tourism

The river is a popular holiday and recreation area for Jetboottouren, rafting and fishing. About numerous canyons, the New Zealand invention bungy jumping is offered. Along its very tortuous course, there are steep rocks on the shore, seamless wide -reaching to the water meadows but also to see dense forests.

Parts of the river were ( The Companions) used by Peter Jackson as Anduin River in the movie Lord of the Rings.
