Raniero Cantalamessa

Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap ( born July 22, 1934 in Colli del Tronto ) is an Italian theologian. He is the official preacher of the Pontifical Household.

Life

Raniero Cantalamessa entered the Capuchin Order and received priestly ordination in 1958. At the Swiss University of Fribourg, he received his doctorate in theology. He was then a doctorate from the Catholic University of Sacro Cuore ( Milan ) in Classical Philology. Cantalamessa taught after studying in Milan as professor of Ancient Church History and Patristics, where he was also Head of the Department of Religious Studies at the Catholic University. In 1975 he was called by Pope Paul VI. appointed to the International Theological Commission. This he was a member until 1981.

In 1980 he was appointed preacher of the Pontifical Household. He exercises this function since then, and keeps each week during Advent and Lent a spiritual lecture for the Pope, the cardinals, bishops and Superior General of the religious communities.

Cantalamessa, has written several books that have been translated into 15 languages. From 1994 to 2010 Cantalamessa moderated in the Italian television channel Rai Uno every Saturday a fifteen- minute program Sunday Gospel.
