Ransom E. Olds

Ransom Eli Olds ( born June 3, 1864 in Geneva, Ohio; † August 26, 1950 in Lansing, Michigan) was an American automotive pioneer and founder of the American car company Oldsmobile. With his company Oldsmobile he took before Henry Ford modern forms of mass production anticipated.

Built by him Oldsmobile " Curved Dash " was the first built in large series, successful and driven by a gasoline engine vehicle. He thereby already developed modern forms of Production Line by vorwärtszog the vehicles on wooden racks from step to step.

Life

Ransom E. Olds spent his childhood and youth in his native city of Geneva, Ohio. In 1880 he moved to Lansing, Michigan, where he worked in his father's company. In his spare time he worked on the construction of steam, later by gasoline cars. He founded in 1897 the Olds Motor Vehicle Co. and the Olds Gasoline Engine Works, which in Michigan merged in 1899 to the Olds Motor Works. The original capital was $ 50,000. The buildings of the Olds Motor Works burned down on March 9, 1901 after a gas explosion. Ransom E. Olds left the company in 1904 and founded a rival company - named after his initials REO Motor Car Company.

Olds died on August 26, 1950 in Lansing at the age of 86 years.
