Ransom Wilson

Ransom Wilson (* 1951 in Tuscaloosa / Alabama) is an American flutist and conductor.

Wilson attended from the age of 14, the North Carolina's School of the Arts and then the Juilliard School of Music. He studied flute with Alain Marion, Sandra Taylor, Lawrence Morgan, Philip Dunigan, Severino Gazzelloni, Julius Baker, Christian Lardé and Arthur Lora. A grant from the Fondation Atlantique enabled him to spend a year studying in Paris, where he took private lessons with Jean -Pierre Rampal.

An album of duets for flute, which he recorded in 1974 with his teacher Rampal, established his international career as a solo flutist. He then worked with such orchestras as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra and musicians such as Frederica von Stade, Jessye Norman, Thomas Hampson, Susan Graham, Dolora Zajick, Nadja Salerno -Sonnenberg, Hilary Hahn, James Galway, Barry Douglas, Peter Frankl and Robin Sutherland together.

In the early 1980s he became interested in conducting, and he took lessons from Roger Neirenberg, James Dixon and Otto Werner Mueller. With thirty musicians, he founded the Solisti New York, with whom he officially debuted in 1983 at Lincoln Center. In addition to standard works for chamber orchestra by Bach, Handel, Mozart and Vivaldi to the repertoire of the ensemble also included works by 20th century composers such as Samuel Barber, Aaron Copeland, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Francis Poulenc and Zoltan Kodaly.

In addition, Wilson also awarded commissions to contemporary composers such as Steve Reich, John Harbison, George Tsontakis, Jean Francaix, Carlos Surinach, Martin Bresnick, Richard Danielpour, Aaron Jay Kernis, Peter Schickele, Joseph Schwanter, Jean -Michel Damase, Carlos Surinach and Deborah Drattell. He headed Symphony Orchestra as the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Denver Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Chamber Symphony Orchestra and the Budapest Strings, with whom he internationally renowned musicians such as Itzhak Perlman, Andre Watts, Frederica von Stade, Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg, Joshua Bell, Garrick Ohlsson, Jeffrey Kahane and Hilary Hahn accompanied. Since 1978, he has an exclusive contract with EMI / Angel. He has published more than thirty albums as a flutist and conductor, three of which were nominated for a Grammy.

Since 1991, Wilson member of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He has also musical director of the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra and artistic director of the OK MOZART International Festival in Oklahoma and is the artistic director of the New York company LE TRAIN BLEU. Wilson is professor of flute at Yale University and has given master classes and summer classes, eg in Nice and at the Juilliard School.
