Raoul Blanchard

Raoul Blanchard ( born September 4, 1877 in Orléans, † March 24, 1965 in Paris) was a French geographer.

Blanchard studied from 1897 geography at the Ecole Normale Superieure with Paul Vidal de la Blache with the Agrégation 1900. Thereafter, he was a teacher at Douai. In addition to researching the geography of the Alps, he also devoted himself to the French in Canada, especially Quebec, about which he wrote several works. His interest began when he was a professor at Harvard from 1922 to 1936 and from there traveled to Québec regularly. 1937 to 1958 he published his twelve -volume work on the geography of the Alps ( Les alpes occidentales ).

In 1960 he received the Gold Medal of the CNRS. In 1958 he became a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques. A mountain in the province of Quebec is named after him.
