Rap Genius

Rap Genius is a website that specializes in the Declaration of hip-hop lyrics. Many texts in hip-hop are even for insiders not understandable, since they are full of coded messages, allusions or references.

Construction of the side

Genesis

Rap Genius was created in October 2009 by three American students who knew each other through their undergraduate years at Yale University, first under the name Rap Exegesis. But it turned out that the name was to spell bad for many and so was changed to the present name three months later. The actual idea for the website had Tom Lehman and Mahbod Moghadam, when Lehman Moghadam asked the meaning of a Cam'ron lyrics. Lehman built the first version of the website and Moghadam, a Stanford graduate in 2008, decided to pursue the idea as a business model. Lehman, the programmer of the site, and Ilan Zechory joined him soon and put the idea to.

Receptions

The website was linked on many blogs and websites, including the Huffington Post and AOL News and mostly positively received. In June 2012, Rap Genius reached the access of 10 million individual users per month.
