History

Together with the equally artificial peninsulas Uilenburg and Valkenburg is Rapenburg at the Amsterdam IJ and was during the " Second Expansion van Amsterdam " ( Tweede vergroting van Amsterdam, 1578-1665 ) created. The city spread was planned for the creation of shipyards, storage areas for wood for shipbuilding and as another line of defense of the city of Amsterdam.

On one of the oldest known figures of Pieter Bast from 1597 Rapenburg can be seen from a bird's perspective. The engraving is on display in Amsterdam "Het National Maritime Museum ." The Dutch East India Company ( Vereenigde Dutch East India Company, VOC) had their initial shipyards, as well as to timber merchants had settled on Rapenburg as suppliers for the VOC there. 1597 acquired the former ship's carpenter husband Jan Michelsz, who had an operation in Lastage, a plot of land on the peninsula. At that time there were few residents on Rapenburg, which has changed in 1608. This year there land was sold. Influential businessmen, members of the Vroedschap and carpenters and masons acquired parcels. Buyers were required to provide a portion of the land for public rights of way and to bear the cost of road construction itself. Many of the plots were owned by the city and were put into use by the Admiraliteit van Amsterdam at the time of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces. The shipyards and timber deposits of VOC were relocated in the second half of the 17th century according to Wittenburg and the Oostelijke islands.

Around 1670 most yards were relocated to other areas and sell the land at today's Prins Hendrikkade for housing. 2012 are available on Rapenburg still some monumental apartments and warehouses of the VOC. Rapenburg part in the Second World War to Amsterdam Jodenbuurt ( Jewish quarter ), among others, with a synagogue and a diamond factory.
