Rapid

Rapids is a general term for the part of a river where the water flows very fast and tearing. It is typically formed by an increase in the slope of the river. Frequently, a narrowing by boulders or weirs plays a role.

An articulated by blocks or rock barrier rapids is called cataract.

Numerous rapids, especially large or heavy traffic flows have been eliminated ( by river straightening, widening river and dams ). For example, disappeared at that time notorious St. John rapids of Moldova ( the Bedřich Smetana in 1874 in the symphonic poem The Moldau musically represented ) with the construction of Štechovice Dam (construction 1937-1945 ) in the floods.

The word for running rapids became the name or part of the name of several places, such as running ( Salzach), Lauffen or running castle.

Several water sports use rapids, especially whitewater canoe (including canoe slalom and play boating) and rafting.
