Rapla

Rapla ( German Rappel ) is a town in the eponymous municipality Rapla in Estonia. It is the center of the circle Rapla.

Geography

By Rapla the river Vigala flows. The city is located about 45 km from Tallinn.

History

Rapla was first mentioned in 1241 as Rapal documented. At the end of the 13th century St. Mary Magdalene Church was built. The place and the church belonged initially to the manor of aluminum. 1478 both came under the rule of the monastery of Padise. It was not until 1705 separated aluminum and Rapla and became independent administrative units.

In the second half of the 19th century Rapla saw its boom. 1866 a pharmacy was opened at the site in 1868 a village school and in 1893 a post house station. 1901 a new church was consecrated on the north bank of the river. From 1900 the city benefited from the narrow gauge railway which ran from Tallinn to Viljandi. Near Rapla settled in a brick and a lemonade factory.

1945 Rapla Großdorf ( alevik ). On 1 January 2003, the city received city rights.

Attractions

Worth seeing is the 1901 finished Evangelical Lutheran Church, with its pseudo- Romanesque twin-tower facade. It is the largest country church in Estonia.
