Ras Laffan Industrial City

Ras Laffan (Arabic رأس لفان Ras Laffan, DMG Ra ʾ s Laffan ) is an industrial settlement, founded in 1997, the natural gas industry in Qatar, 80 km northeast of Doha. It is operated by Qatar Petroleum. Covering an area of 106 km ² is a 8.5 km ² large industrial port (since 1996 ), several gas liquefaction plants, which are supplied from the North Field, and industrial plants in the petrochemical industry. The population size, mainly originating from the Indian subcontinent workers in 2004 was 31,611.

In May 2006, started the construction of a plant for the thermal cracking ( steam cracker ) with a capacity of 1.3 million tons of ethylene per year. The of the Ras Laffan Olefins Company ( RLOC ) operated scheduled to go into operation in 2008.

In 2004, Qatar Petroleum and Exxon Mobil announced around 7 billion USD for 750 BCF of natural gas in Ras Laffan to invest in a gas liquefaction plant RasGas II, which is primarily intended for the United States.

In 2005 was begun by ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum, Qatargas II to build a gas liquefaction plant for 750 BCF of natural gas for the UK.

2006 saw a GTL plant of Sasol in Ras Laffan in operation.

In October 2003, there has been an agreement on the construction of a GTL plant in Ras Laffan between Royal Dutch Shell and Qatar Petroleum. You should go in 2009 in parts in production. By 2015, further investments of around 130 billion U.S. dollars in the industrial city planned, with the surface Ras Laffans will almost double to 205 km ², as the port is adapted to the increase in production capacity.
