Rasht

BW

Rasht (Persian رشت ) ( Gilaki: Resht ) is the capital of the Iranian province of Gilan.

Rasht is just under 640,000 inhabitants, the largest city in the südkaspischen lowlands, a coastal strip that extends from Āzarbāydschān in the northwest of the Iranian provinces of Gilan and Māzandarān to the plains of the province of Golestan in the east.

Together with Āzarbāydschān were Gilan and its capital Rasht repeatedly occupied by Russia and the Soviet Union: 1723-36, 1909/11-12, 1915-18, 1920-21, 1941-46. Here the Iranian Soviet Republic was established.

Rasht is known for its old bazaar, the trade flourishes mainly on the food (fruits, vegetables and Caspian fish).

The University Gilans in Rasht University maintains a partnership with the Technical University of Berlin.

Climate

The climate in Rasht differs considerably from that in the rest of the country. Due to its proximity to the Caspian Sea and Alborz Mountains in the south, particularly many, rainy clouds gather above the town. Summers are humid hot and the winters mild. Rainfall can vary greatly from year to year. In the record year fell more than 2200 mm in dry years, the value can fall to 700 mm. Aided by the high amounts of rain can be grown in northern Iran and rice.
