Ratibor I, Duke of Pomerania

Ratibor I. (* unknown; † May 7, 1156 ) was a Duke of Pomerania - Stolp - Schlawe from the house of grasping. He reigned in the time of the Christianization of Pomerania. He is the progenitor of a branch line of the Griffin house, the Ratiboriden.

Life and achievements

Ratibor I and his brother Wartislaw I ( † 1134/1148 ) are the first two certainly occupied Dukes of Pomerania from the House of grasping. Who was her father, and was born in what year Ratibor is unknown.

During his lifetime, his brother Wartislaw was this in the foreground. Under Wartislaw the Christianization of Pomerania was initiated. Wartislaw himself stepped forward in 1124 to Christianity, the date of baptism Ratibor is not known. Tradition has it, however, that Ratibor in 1135 undertook a successful expedition to Norway, where the city Konungahella (now Kungälv, Sweden) plundered.

After the death of his brother, who was probably killed 1134-1148 by a heathen, Ratibor I. took over for his sons Bogislaw I and Casimir I the government in Pomerania.

1147 led the Wendish Crusade of Henry the Lion and the Saxon princes to Pomerania. Before Stettin Bishop Adalbert of Pomerania and Duke Ratibor faced up to the leaders of the Saxon army, and pointed out that Stettin and Pomerania had already accepted Christianity. 1148 to Ratibor known before Saxon princes in Havel mountain again to the Christian faith and vowed to work for propagation and defense of Christianity. In 1153 Ratibor founded the monastery in Stolpe Stolpe at the Peene, at the place where his brother had been killed Wartislaw I. and built a church in his memory.

Ratibor died on 7 May 1156th He was ( moved to Pudagla 1309) buried in the monastery Rough on the island of Usedom.

Ratibor nephew Bogislaw I and Casimir I took now the government itself as the Dukes of Pomerania. Ratibor own descendants, however, referred to as a line of Ratiboriden, ruled as Prince in a smaller area in Eastern Pomerania, which is referred to as a country or as a rule Schlawe Schlawe - Stolp.
