Raúl Juliá

Raúl Juliá ( born March 9, 1940 as Raúl Rafael Juliá y Arcelay in San Juan, Puerto Rico; † October 24, 1994 in Manhasset, New York ) was an American actor Puerto Rican descent.

Life

Raúl Juliá (real name: Raul Rafael Carlos Julia y Arcelay ) grew up in San Juan. In 1964 he moved to New York City. There he studied drama with Wynn Handman and initially joined afterwards in numerous theater productions. In the years 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1982, he was nominated for a Tony Award, respectively. For his role in the American- Brazilian film drama The Kiss of the Spider Woman by Hector Babenco Juliá received a 1985 nomination for a Golden Globe. He obtained with his portrayal of Gomez Addams in The Addams Family films (1991 and 1993) are particularly well known.

Raúl Juliá suffered on October 16, 1994 in his New York apartment a stroke and fell into a coma from which he never awoke. He died eight days later. His body was transferred to Puerto Rico, where he was given a state funeral.

Juliá was married twice. The first marriage to Magda Vasallo had no children and divorced in 1969 after four years. With his second wife Merel Poloway he was married from 1976 until his death in 1994 and had two sons, Raul and Benjamin.
