Space Mountain is a prominent mountain in the Saxon Switzerland Saxony.

Location

Space Mountain is located two miles south of Hinterhermsdorf in the rear Saxon Switzerland near the border with the Czech Republic. Just north of the mountain passes, the deeply carved Kirnitzschtal. After the Second World War, a wooden surveying storm was on the summit were built, the remains of which are still visible.

Space Mountain is part of the core zone of the National Park Saxon Switzerland.

Geology

Space Mountain is one of the few basaltic cone mountain in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The basalt penetrated the Tertiary as liquid magma along fractures and faults in the sandstone one. In most cases, such melts, however, remained in the sandstone plaque stuck and cooled there. The erosion wore over the millions the surrounding soft sandstone more strongly than the hard basalt, so that the space mountain today stands out as a striking, almost circular dome of the countryside.

Way to the summit

A visit to the mountain is not permitted since the establishment of the National Park Saxon Switzerland. The old, historic ascent ( Raumbergkuppenweg ) led from east counterclockwise around the mountain extend to the summit.

Because of the high forest cover, there is no view from the room mountain.
