Rauna

Rauna ( German Ronneburg ) is a town in northern Latvia, and the center of the county of the same name (in Latvian: Raunas Novads ).

History

The Ronnenburg was built in 1262 at the suggestion of the Archbishop of Riga Albert II. Its location on the trade route to Pskov was the site of one of the most important centers of the Archdiocese. In the 16th century the castle was enlarged, the place lost but after the Livonian War its strategic importance to Cesis. In the Second Northern War, the castle was destroyed. Today, even the walls of the main building to visit.

Others

  • Today's Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in the late 13th century and is home to sculptures from the 14th century. Here was a community of the Moravian Church.
  • The composer, folklorist and educator Jānis Cimze (1814-1881) was born in the village of Rauna.
  • Is located nearby Rauna Rauna a river of the same tufa source, called Raunas Staburags. This is the only such natural object in Latvia after the national symbol Daugava Staburags sank in 1965 due to the construction of a hydro- electric plant in the Daugava River.

Raunas novads

The community should come in 2009 in the course of administrative reform to the district Priekuļi, but instead formed an administrative community with Drusti, although both communities not directly adjacent to each other. ( See also: Administrative divisions of Latvia )
