The name suffix Rab or abbreviated often only R. designated an honorary title for Jewish scholars.

As examples may be mentioned Rab Nachman (Rab Nahman bar Jacob, Raw Nachman ben Jacob ), an amora of the third generation in Babylon or Rab Nahman bar Isaac (d. 356 ), an amora of the fourth generation in Babylonia.
