Ravanica

The monastery Ravanica is a monastery in Serbia. It is located at the foot of the Ore Mountains near the Serbian village Senje at Ćuprija.

Ravanica is a foundation of Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović, at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389 was killed and whose remains were then buried in this monastery. Ravanica was built in 1375-1377, the frescoes were completed within the Church a few years before the Battle of Kosovo Polje.

In the style of the Morava school the monastery from the outside looks more like a fortress. The entire monastery complex consisted of church, various outbuildings, monastic cells, hospital and a refectory and was enclosed by a fortification wall with seven towers, one of which is still part of the northern wall of three towers exist.

The church was dedicated to the Ascension of Christ. It has the form of an Orthodox cross with five domes, combined with three apses. Four free-standing columns support the central dome. To the east you will find a tripartite apse.
