Øravík

Øravík or Ørðavík [ ø ː ɹavʊik ] (Danish: Ørdevig ) is a place of the Faroe Islands on the west coast of Suðuroy.

Øravík is located on the south bank of the Trongisvágsfjørðurs.

Øravík is an old village which was due to its location at the center of the island from time immemorial as Thingstätte on Suðuroy. The actual Thingstätte was Uppi millum Stovur, approximately 2 km west of the village.

The bay is located on the Øravík, bears the same name, while the promontory on the north side Gálgatangi means. It is named after the gallows once stood here and to which the person sentenced to death were hanged. Facing the sea here is also nice gorge " Gálgagjógv " ( gallows gorge ), draws attention to the street a billboard on the. In the case of an execution a bar was placed over the gorge, where the condemned were hung directly above the sea.

The nearest bay is Tjaldavík on the inside of the 7.5 acre Tjaldavíkshólmur, one of the 11 bars of the Faroe Islands. During the meeting of the vártings " Suðuroyarting " tents were erected here. These tents ( Faroese: tjald = tent) owe the bay and the spar her name. The Tjaldavíkshólmur belongs administratively to the southern neighboring village Hov. It provides sufficient food for ten sheep.
