Rawa Mazowiecka

Rawa Mazowiecka is a city in the powiat Rawski in the region of Łódź, Poland. It has the status of a municipality. She is also seat of the rural municipality ( gmina wiejska ) of them but not heard.

Geography

Rawa Mazowiecka is 55 km east of Łódź at the confluence of the rivers Rawka and Rylka. The city has a surface area of 13.67 km ². 63 % of the urban area is used for agriculture, 3% is covered by forest.

History

The first written mention of the village dates from 1228, but the original location of the place is not known. The city was chartered Rawa Mazowiecka 1321. 1355 bis 1370 Castle of the Duke of Mazovia was built here, the ruins of which can be found even today in the vicinity of the place.

During the reign Siemowits III. was the site of the capital of Mazovia. 1462 was the Duchy of Rawa Rawa Voivodeship to. Rawa Mazowiecka was at that time one of the largest cities of Mazovia. 1613 already was the Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary ( kościół Niepokalanego Poczęcia Marii Panny Najświętszej ) in Rawa Mazowiecka. 1622 a Jesuit college was established in the Chryzostom, Jan Pasek taught.

During the Great Northern War the city was occupied by the Swedes and destroyed, among the ruined buildings was also the castle. During the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, the city was part of Prussia and the Rawa Voivodeship was dissolved. As of 1807, the place was instead seat of a county. 1807, the site became part of the Duchy of Warsaw and the newly formed eight years later Congress Poland.

During the First World War Rawa Mazowiecka was almost completely destroyed. 1945 the Red Army marched into the destroyed about 80% city.

From 1975-1998 the city belonged to the province of Skierniewice.
