Rawghlie Clement Stanford

Rawghlie Clement Stanford ( born August 2, 1879 in Buffalo Gap, Taylor County, Texas, † December 15, 1963 in Phoenix, Arizona ) was an American politician (Democratic Party) and 1937-1939 Governor of the State of Arizona.

Private life

His family moved to Phoenix in 1881, where he attended public schools and for two years the Arizona Normal School. During the Spanish- American War of 1898 Stanford was in the United States Army and served as 18 months in the Philippines. Then he returned to Arizona back, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1907. In 1915 he was elected Judge of the Superior Court of Maricopa County. He held this post until 1922. Moreover, he worked from 1920 to 1936 on the Board of Education for Phoenix Union High School. He was also in the years 1928 and 1929, the chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee.

Governor of Arizona

On November 3, 1936 Stanford was elected governor of Arizona, and sworn in on January 4, 1937. During this tenure, he dealt with the recovery of Arizona's economy, which degenerated during the Great Depression. Furthermore, the Federal Social Security Act, a minimum wage law, adopted and unfair sales practices was banished. He decided not to seek re-election and left as on January 2, 1939 his office.

He returned to his judicial office and served as 1942-1944 at the Arizona Supreme Court After that, he served as Chief Justice from 1944 to 1953. Stanford passed away on December 15, 1963 and was buried in Phoenix. He was married to Ruth Butchee. The couple had six children together.
