Ray Abrams

Ray Abrams, actually Raymond Abramson ( born January 23, 1920 in New York, NY, † July 6, 1992 in Brooklyn ) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, whose style is attributable to the Bebop.

Ray Abrams is the brother of drummer Lee Abrams. In 1944 he was involved in sessions of the bebop pioneers in Clark Monroe's Uptown House. On record he can be heard with Kenny Clarke and his 52nd Street Boys ( 1946). He then played in 1946 in the first big band of Dizzy Gillespie, the same year with Don Redman, with whom he went on a European tour; 1947 to 1949 he worked for Andy Kirk. In the late 1940s he had his own band, the Ray Abrams Orchestra, which he had built up mainly with the trumpet player Hank Dougherty. With this group he performed at the Savoy Ballroom. The resulting gone Ray Abrams Big Band existed after the death of Ray Abrams on. In 1949, Abrams played back at Gillespie, the same year he joined the band of Hot Lips Page. In 1951 he worked with Paul Gayten, 1952, he recorded with Bill Harris.
