Ray MacSharry

Raymond " Ray" MacSharry (Irish Réamann Mac Searraigh born April 29, 1938 in Sligo ) is a former Irish politician. He was a member of the House for the Fianna Fáil from 1969 to 1988 and he was briefly Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister ).

Biography

Ray MacSharry was born in 1938 in County Sligo. The Irish election 1969, he was elected to the Irish House of Commons. In 1979 he was Minister of State for Finance and Public Works. In December of that year he was nominated for the presidency of Charles Haughey Fianna Fáil. He was later rewarded for this loyalty by becoming Minister of Agriculture. In 1982 he was for a short time Tánaiste and Minister of Finance.

1984 MacSharry was elected to the European Parliament. In 1987 he came back to the Irish Government and was re- finance. He was appointed by Prime Minister Haughey to the Irish EU Commissioner in 1989. He was appointed by President Jacques Delors in his second Commission for Agriculture Commissioner. This he remained until 1993.

His son Marc MacSharry is also active as a Fianna Fáil politician and since 2002 has been a senator in the Seanad Éireann.
