Raymond Aubrac

Raymond Aubrac ( born July 31, 1914 in Lyon, † April 10, 2012 in Paris) was a French civil engineer and a leading member of the Resistance.

Life

Aubrac was born to Jewish parents, under the name Raymond Samuel. After his studies he worked as a civil engineer in Strasbourg. In 1939, he married Lucie Aubrac.

After the invasion of the Wehrmacht in France and the defeat of 1940, he founded with his wife, the Resistance group Libération Sud in Lyon. 1941 this group merged with the Emmanuel d' Astier de la of Vigerie to establish the underground newspaper Libération. 1943 followed the couple in the Armée secrète, the secret army of Charles Delestraint. Aubrac Jewish parents were deported and died in Auschwitz. Raymond was living under the alias Vallet, Ermelin and Balmont. He rose to become head of the army, as Charles Delestraint was arrested in Paris on June 9.

On March 15, 1943 Raymond Aubrac from the Milice française of the Vichy regime arrested and released shortly after. On June 21, the Gestapo arrested him again, this time along with Jean Moulin and seven other high-ranking members of the Resistance, in Caluire -et -Cuire on the outskirts of Lyon. Aubrac was deported to the Fort Montluc, tortured by the notorious Gestapo chief of Lyon, Klaus Barbie, interrogated and sentenced to death. On October 21, 1943 liberated Lucie and her comrades Raymond along with thirteen other Résistants. Because they had been betrayed, Lucie fled with her first child and Raymond in February 1944 to London. The name Aubrac kept the couple in it, it was the last deck name she had used in France before their flight.

During the liberation of France appointed General Charles de Gaulle Raymond Aubrac from 1944 to 1945 as Commissioner for Marseille. Until 1948, Aubrac worked in the Ministry of Reconstruction, where he was responsible for mine clearance throughout France and for programs to use unused building permits.

Aubrac, the lifetime then assigned to the political left and the Communist Party was close to, without having been a member, founded a study and research office for modern industry. He has also worked as a senior official of the Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO) in Rome. Since March 2009, he was also active for the newly formed Russell Tribunal on Palestine question.
