Raymond Depardon

Raymond Depardon ( born July 6, 1942 in Villefranche -sur -Saône ) is a French photojournalist and filmmaker.

Biography

The early sixties, he did his military service as a war correspondent in the Algerian war. Together with Gilles Caron in 1967, he founded the photo agency Gamma. In the following years he worked in crisis areas such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Chad. For his report on Chile, he won in 1973 along with his staff Chas Gerretsen and David Burnett Robert Capa Gold Medal. His reportage from Chad, which was created from 1975 to 1977, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. He left Gamma 1978 in order to join the photography agency Magnum.

His first short film acted in 1969 by the Prague student Jan Palach, who burned himself in protest against the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the armed forces of the Warsaw Pact itself. His first feature-length documentary Une partie de campagne 1974 showed the campaign Valéry Giscard d' Estaing for the French presidency. This film was banned for decades, at the instigation of Giscard d'Estaing, as it clearly turned out the discrepancy between the private person and the presidential candidates. It was only in 2002, he was first performed under the name of 50.81 %. In addition to its documentary Depardon has also directed several feature films.

Depardon's photographs have been exhibited in numerous galleries in France and around the world including New York, Rotterdam, Budapest, Zurich, Mexico City and Amsterdam. In addition to the awards already mentioned, he received the 1991 Grand Prix National de la Photographie in 2000 and the Prix Nadar. The French film award César he received in various categories 1982, 1986 and 1994. 2007 was marked Depardon for Cinéma d' Eté responsible, a short film of three minutes in length, of the works of 32 other directors, including Theo Angelopoulos, David Lynch and Roman Polanski, the film Chacun son cinéma anthology formed.
