Raymond of Barbastro

Raymond of Roda ( Ramón de Roda ) (* 1067 in Durban, Gers, France, † June 21, 1126 in Huesca) was bishop of Roda de Isábena and Barbastro. In the Catholic Church he is venerated as a saint.

Life

Raimund was born into a noble family from the northern Pyrenees. After his studies and military service, he turned to the ecclesiastical career and became Canons Regular in Pamiers. Alfonso I of Aragon gave him in 1104 the episcopate in Roda de Isábena so as to settle the dispute between the bishops of Urgell and Huesca beyond the limits of their dioceses in the newly acquired areas around Barbastro. Nevertheless, there were disputes over the scope of the jurisdiction area. Raimund was supported by the popes Paschal II and Calixtus II. 1116 prompted Bishop Esteban of Huesca, with the support of the patriciate of Barbastro and the king Alfonso I, under the accusation, to oppose the war against the Muslims and other heretics, the expulsion of Raymond from Roda. Barbastro was then the Diocese of Huesca assumed, while Raymond was able to return to Roda. In 1125 Raimund accompanied the King Alfonso when attempting the conquest of Andalusia. Raymond died on June 21, 1126 and was buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of Roda.

During the tenure of Raymond, the reconstruction of the Cathedral of Roda was started. Numerous Romanesque churches were built in the diocese as the two of Taüll in the Boi.

Canonization

Raimund was canonized in 1135. His feast day is June 21. He is the patron of the diocese and the city Barbastro Barbastro.
