Raimund II Ruben of Antioch (c. 1195 in Antioch, † 1222 presumably in Tarsus ) was Prince of Antioch 1216-1219.

Life

Raimund Reuben was the son of Raymond IV, Count of Tripoli and the Armenian Princess Alix, a daughter of Ruben III. and Isabella of Toron, niece of Baron Leon II Rubenos. Shahanshah Silifke, Alice's first husband, had just suddenly, though not died very unexpected. In the marriage contract with Raimund was determined that a male child should be the heir of this compound Leons and after the death of his father, ruler of Antioch.

Raimund Rubens father died in the spring of 1197, after which his grandfather Bohemond III. him and his mother Alice sent to Armenia, where his great-uncle Leon of Armenia had just been crowned king. The papal legate, Conrad, Archbishop of Mainz urged, however, that Bohemond and his barons Ruben solemnly recognized as his successor. Alice married in 1220 Vahram Korykos of which, however, died two years later.

Bohemond of Tripoli, the second son of Bohemond III. , Also laid claim to Antioch, and set his father in the fall of 1198 with the help of the Templars, the Hospitallers, the Pisans and Genoese from. However, Leon I. reached with the help of the pope, that he had to use his father again and leave the city. 1206 Leon sent his wife Isabella of Antioch for alleged infidelity in exile, after he had almost beaten to death. Had to leave the court, which loaded safely relations with Antioch also a number of their relatives. Rita ( Stefano ), his daughter, was then raised by her grandmother with the same name.

After the death of Bohemond III. 1206 to Bohemond of Tripoli sat again in Antioch fixed, while ignoring the claims of his nephew Ruben. A number of barons fled to the Armenian court to Sis, including the Chamberlain Olivier, Roger du Mont, Louard, Thomas Maslebrun, Bohemond Lair and Guillaume de l' Isle. Raimund Ruben promised the Hospitallers Jabala in the territory of Antioch for their support, 1210 also Bikisrail. However, both were in Muslim hands, only Jabala ever recaptured. The Hospitallers had originally supported Bohemond, but were in 1204 transferred to the side of his opponents and had subsequently received from Leon II Seleucia, together with some surrounding castles.

Leon sent a message to Antioch, in which he insisted on the rights of Ruben and related documents submitted. However Bohemond was not impressed. Thereupon Leon got in touch with the Latin Patriarch Peter of Antioch. This also sat down on the Rights of Rubens and excommunicated Bohemond the one-eyed man finally. He ordered that no bells should be rung at Antioch, held no fair and buried not dead until Bohemond consented. After a failed uprising end of 1207, Bohemond had him thrown into prison was where he died in July 1208 because he drank lamp oil from hunger and thirst, in his despair.

Since Leo I had no male heir, he had Ruben provided as his successor and George, the illegitimate son of Prince Mleh be blinded to back his claims. To 1209 Ruben began an affair with Helvis of Lusignan, the daughter of Amalric of Cyprus. Helvis had been, with his relatives Odo married Walter of Montbeliard, Konnetable of Jerusalem and of Cyprus Regent during the minority of King Hugo I and her sister's husband Burgundia of Dampierre, the marriage was not consummated, probably because the bride still was too young. When Walter lost its position of power and was indicted for embezzlement, to Helvis could even look for a husband. Where they Ruben, the sources came to know as handsome and " with blond hair that looked like gold " remains unclear, perhaps it was at the court of Hugo I. Nicosia. Both Hugo and his close aide John of Ibelin should later Armenian princesses marry, the relations must therefore have been tight. The marriage with Odo was dissolved, and Helvis married September 1210, after the accession of her brother Hugo Ruben, although Odo later with Pope Innocent III. complained, claiming that the marriage was in fact taken place, and Helvis live in sin with Ruben. Walter of Montbéliard, who faced this new marriage hostile, took refuge after his embezzlement as regent for Hugo I had been uncovered to Bohemond. 1214 or 1215 married his second wife Sibylle Leon de Lusignan, the daughter of Isabella and Amalric, a sister of Helvis, thus became in-law Rubens.

Shortly before his death on May 1, 1219 appointed Leo unexpectedly his four year old daughter Zabel from his second marriage with Sibyl of Lusignan as his successor.

As Leon in 1216, with the help of the Hospitallers under their Grand Master Garin de Montaigu ( 1207-1228 ) took Antioch, he sat Ruben as a ruler, which he lost in 1219 but returned to Bohemund.

Stephane ( Rita ), Leon's older daughter from his first marriage with a lady of the House of Antioch, whom he had offended because of infidelity, had married in 1213 John of Brienne, king of Jerusalem. After the death of Johann Leon rose from Brienne claim to the throne of Armenia, recognized by the Pope. After Stephane 1219 in Acre, died allegedly as a result of ill-treatment by her husband because she should have tried Jolanthe to poison his daughter from his first marriage, the Throne entitled to Reuben went on. He went in 1220 after Damietta to discuss about it with the papal legate Pelagius. During his absence, however, Bohemond of Antioch reconquered Tripoli. Only the citadel was further held by the Hospitallers, who had always been loyal to Ruben. Ruben was with his mother Alice in Cilicia and conquered Tarsus, but received by the Armenian barons, who had spoken in favor Zabel, no help.

1221 conquered the Hethumide Constantine, now regent for Zabel, Tarsus and took Alice and Ruben caught. Reuben died in prison.

1226 forced Hayton, the son of Constantine, Zabel to marry and founded a new Armenian ruling dynasty, the Hethumiden which replaced Leos Rubeniden. In the same year lost the Hospitallers Seleucia. Helvis and her daughters fled to Cyprus. His daughter, Maria of Antioch, Titularherrin of Toron (* 1215, † after 1240) married Philip of Montfort († 1270), son of Guy of Montfort and Helvis of Ibelin, Lord of Castres, La Ferte- Alais and Bréthencourt, and later Mr. of Tyre and Toron. Raymond's daughter Eschiva of Antioch (* 1216, † 1262 ) married Hethum of Lambron (* 1220, † 1250).
