Raymonda

Raymonda (Russian Раймонда; often written Raymonda ) is a ballet in three acts by the Russian composer Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov. The choreography is by Marius Petipa, libretto by Lidija Paschkowa. The premiere took place in St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre on January 7, 1898.

Action

Raymonda plays in Hungary at the time of the Crusades. The constantly appearing white woman is a legendary ghost from the early modern period.

Act 1

Raymonda is celebrating her birthday at her aunt, Countess Sybille of Hungary Castle. Even knight Jean de Brienne, Raymonda fiance is present. However, the lovers must part, as de Brienne moved with the Hungarian army in the war. The following night, Raymonda appears in a dream the White woman and shows her a secret garden, where Raymonda and Jean de Brienne recognizes. This, however, turns into an evil sheik, who declares his love.

Act 2

A new festival is celebrated and guests from foreign countries are invited. Among them Raymonda discovers with horror the sheikh from her dream, Abderachman. This requires to marry Raymonda, but what they reject. Thereupon kidnapped Abderachman Raymonda, the kidnapping is thwarted by the surprisingly returned Jean de Brienne.

Act 3

The reunited couple celebrating their wedding in the palace of the king.

Music

Raymonda (op. 57, 1896 /97) was Glazunov's first ballet. Petipa had turned to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's death in Glazunov. While Glazunov wrote the composition, however, refused to implement the stringent requirements of the choreographer subject of music.

" Mr. Glazunov not want to change a single note, not even in the variation of Miss Legnani, or at least a trace of a gallop. It is terrible to work with a composer who has given his music at a publishing house and published before. "

Not once appeared Glazunov at the rehearsals and he realized only at the premiere of the importance of the decisions Petipa.

Style

Petipa has incorporated many elements of the Hungarian character dance in his choreography. Typically all the inserted assisted in the neck and waist hands, folded arms or averted from the audience upper body.
