Rødøy is a municipality in Norway in Nordland Fylke. In the Middle Ages Rødøy one of three parishes in Helgeland was. Later in the Middle Ages Helgeland was divided into two halves: Rødøy and Herøy.
The center is located on a peninsula, surrounded by the Melfjord and from Vælansfjord. A key feature is the rock formation Rødøyløva that also the coat of arms has been the subject ( "on a silver background A red lion "). The coat of arms was adopted in 1988. This sphinx -like rock formation was always an important landmark on the ship route on the coast.
