Rebecca Soni

Rebecca Soni ( born March 18, 1987 in Freehold, New Jersey) is an American swimmer on the chest routes and multiple world record holder.

Career

Rebecca Soni studied Communication Sciences at the University of Southern California and started the Trojan Swim Club. Soni operation first gymnastics before swimming. She had her national and international breakthrough in 2005, since she also is part of the U.S. national team. In the U.S., she won the title over 200m breaststroke at the Summer Universiade in 2005 she won the 200m and 100m breaststroke silver medals. In the Short Course World Championships in Shanghai in 2006 Soni missed a medal in fourth just on their parade route 200m breaststroke. There she won as well as about half as long distance in the following year, the title at the U.S. Championships.

At the U.S. Trials 2008, Soni qualified in fourth place when about 100 m breaststroke and victorious over twice the distance for the Olympic Games in Beijing. There it began in the two races. About 100 m she won silver behind the winning in world record time Leisel Jones from Australia. About 200m breaststroke she could leave the Australian behind and won in a world record time of 2:20,22 minutes the gold medal.

At the Olympic Games in London, she swam the 200 m breaststroke in the semifinals in 2:20,00 minutes and thus beat the old world record of annamay Pierse by 12 hundredths of a second. Just one day later, they improved this in the final minutes to 2:19:59.
