Reclaim the Streets

The term Reclaim the Streets ( German for about Holt you back up the road ) denotes a form of action with the overall objective of the Community appropriating public space.

History

It was designated as a resistance movement against globalization, which is being pursued by companies as a form of opposition against the car as the most common means of transport, the urban planning and use of public space determined. There are often carnival -like celebrations organized.

Examples

On June 18, 1999 on the eve of the G8 summit in Cologne in 1999, RTS organized the largest ever demonstration in Cologne: 10,000 demonstrators blocked downtown banks and bridges.

The Berlin dance Guerrilla is a group that dances regularly in public space, as well as the dance guerrilla Hanover, which was founded in 2006 after the Berlin model.

As part of the so-called Critical Mass ride a few dozen world in big cities to tens of thousands of cyclists together through the streets to raise as their claim to a portion of the road space. In many cities, these flights are regularly held once a month. The Budapest Critical Mass, the largest in the world, has up to 80,000 participants.

It is rare that Reclaim the Streets parties are accompanied by attacks on property ownership, such as in Zurich on 6 February 2010
