Recuay (Peru)

Recuay is the capital of the province Recuay and is located in the valley of the Rio Santa in the Andean mountains of northwestern Peru.

Location

Recuay is located in the upper part of the Callejón de Huaylas known as densely populated and fertile middle reaches of the Santa River. The city lies at an altitude of 3,394 m above sea level between the Cordillera Blanca in the east and the Cordillera Negra in the west. The nearest villages are Catac 9 km upstream and 27 km downstream Huaraz.

Population

The population has risen from 2,306 inhabitants ( census 1993) over 5,198 (2003) to 5,898 inhabitants (calculated 2005).

History

Grave finds near Recuay are the so-called Recuay (ca. 100 BC -750 BC) associated with culture, including with figurative ceramic vessels made of white clay with red and black patterns.

On December 19, 1626, died in Recuay born in Madrid / Spain 1572 Peruvian Archbishop Gonzalo de Ocampo.

Importance

Recuay located in an important agricultural cultivation and livestock area.

To the east fork at Recuay two major access roads to Chavin from allowing over the pass roads " Tunel de Kowish " ( 4,550 m) and " Yanashallash " ( 4,700 m), the eastern entrance to the Cordillera Blanca.

To the west of the provincial capital on the " Huancapeti Pass " is ( 4.680 m) and the city Aija connected to the Pacific coast.
