Red 2G is a blue red azo dye.

Properties

Red 2G forms red crystals, their absorption maxima at λ = 506 nm and λ = 532 nm.

Use

It is used as a food additive. The dye was used primarily in Ireland and the UK in there popular hamburgers and breakfast sausages to simulate a higher meat content.

A degradation product of Red 2G in the body is aniline, which has caused cancer in animal studies and DNA damage. Even Red 2G Some people may experience an allergic reaction and it is suspected that it can also trigger eczema.

Admission

The dye was allowed under the number E 128 for use in sausages and minced meat with cereal in the EU food additive. Due to the cancer -causing effect in animals 2G is recommended by EFSA no safe dose for more red. The European Commission has therefore canceled the admission of Red 2G as from 28 July 2007. Completed even before the EU decision-making products can be declared to have sold. The Irish government was the EU-wide ban previously.

In Switzerland, Red 2G was until March 2008 approved for ground beef with a vegetable share of over 4%.

In addition, the substance is still approved for cosmetics that are not intended for contact with mucous membranes.
