Red Bull X-Alps

The Red Bull X-Alps is an international competition for glider flying teams in the bivouac, which was first performed in 2003. He is considered the toughest paragliding competition in the world and one of the toughest adventure races in the world, as he goes over several days without rest and relaxation. The competition has the status of an " unofficial world championship ." The competition

The aim of the competition is to cross the Alps from Salzburg to Monaco arc. These different turn buoys must be passed. The exact route varies by the turning points that are changed from competition to competition. The only allowed means of transportation are the paraglider flight and locomotion on foot, while also walking sticks are allowed. Any use of cable cars, automobiles or other means is not allowed.

The duration is limited to a maximum of 21 days, respectively, the time it takes for the winner, plus 48 hours. For the pilots, who have not reached the destination, the lack of distance is considered the goal.

For 2011, a new rule was introduced for safety reasons: The athletes must insert an uninterrupted rest break between 23.00 clock, and 4:00 clock. During this time they may not move further than 250 meters from its rest position away himself.

2013, the safety measures were extended such that the obligatory rest period was extended to 1.5 hours. It now includes the period between 22.30 and 5.00 clock clock. However, the 2013 competition a night pass was introduced, with which each athlete is unique except during the race from the obligation to nocturnal rest. The use of Night Pass must be registered to 12 clock noon of the day in question. Furthermore, no prototype screens shall be permitted, but only paragliders, harnesses, rescue equipment and helmets that have the latest EN and LTF certification. The Team

A team consists of the pilot and an assistant. The wizard must the pilot with information, food and equipment supply and serves as a link to the racing line.

The pilot must constantly paraglider, lead his harness with parachute, helmet and a GPS receiver with transmission device of this GPS data with it. All other equipment must be transported in parts of the supporter.

Implementation

Thanks to the GPS technology, the entire competition on the live tracking around the clock can be followed on the Internet. About the data logger and GSM phones, the current location is continuously sent to the racing line and made ​​visible on the official website.

X-Alps 2003

The Red Bull X-Alps 2003 competition was the first X-Alps paragliding competition in the bivouac flying.

The route

Of the 19 participants who started on 14 July 2003 on the Dachstein, only three pilots reached the goal in Monaco.

The other teams put back between 30 and 90 percent of the route. The ceremony was performed by Prince Albert in person; he gave the three teams that reached the destination, the Olympic medals of Monaco.

X-Alps 2005

The Red Bull X-Alps 2005 competition was the second X-Alps paragliding competition in the bivouac flying and the first on which also took part in a women's team. The start of the race was between 1 and 3 August 2005, depending on the weather, planned.

Until 30 April 2005, the teams were able to sign up for hosting 2005. In addition to defending Kaspar Henny 16 other pilots from 13 countries were registered with their teams. The first time was with Kari Castle and Niki Hamilton also two women at the start, the latter in a pure women's team.

Results

In this discharge a total of four teams reached the target in Monaco, while three teams had to cancel for health reasons the race. All other teams put back 25-88 percent of the distance.

X-Alps 2007

The Red Bull X-Alps 2007 competition was the third X-Alps competition and was launched on 23 July 2007 at 9:30.

2007 reached a total of 5 teams, the goal in Monaco. 12 of the 30 teams had to give way. Fastest after time was Martin Müller; However, he had to Mt Gros a time penalty of 36 hours to settle because of a violation of the airspace of the airfield Sion. Müller was overtaken at Mt Gros by Alex Hofer, and Toma Coconea and thus only third.

X - Alps 2009

Reached in 2009 only two teams the goal in Monaco. 12 teams were forced to retire prematurely, were disqualified or taken as a last out of the race. Fastest athlete was Chrigel Maurer, who was the first ever Monaco participants reached flying ( he landed on the beach in Roquebrune and then ran to the last turning point on Mont Gros, from where he flew to the finish ). A day or so later reached the only other participants of last year's winner Alex Hofer also flying Monaco. The winner Chrigel Maurer put 72% ( 999 km ) returns the distance ( 1379 km ) in the air, the remaining 28 % (380 miles) of the route he ran. X - Alps 2011

The Race Committee has selected 2011 30 athletes for the race. On 23 November 2010 two additional participants were re-nominated. Two months before the start of the race had to Lloyd Pennicuik (AUS) and Ramon Morillas ( ESP) cancel their participation due to health problems or injury.
